NEXT BIG THING? TV’S RISING STARSComparing up and coming actors with their established counterparts
Teenage dreams: Darren Criss & Neil Patrick HarrisWhen we think of four-time Tony Awards host Neil Patrick Harris, it’s easy to make comparisons to up and comer Darren Criss, another triple threat. As a 16-year-old, Harris had his breakout role playing a teenage doctor on “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” while Criss has made his mark playing a teenager on the musical dramedy series “Glee.” Harris has since starred in Broadway productions like “Rent” and “Sweeney Todd.” Similarly, Criss’ recent Broadway debut in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” earned the musical its most profitable three weeks with him as the lead.
Harris departed from his “Doogie” days starring as a caricatured version of himself in the “Harold & Kumar” film franchise, and is currently wrapping up his last season as the scene-stealing, reformed womanizer Barney Stinson on “How I Met Your Mother.” In real life, the openly gay actor was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2010. Criss definitely has the potential to reach these heights. Since 2012, he had his feature film debut in “Girl Most Likely” with Kristen Wiig, was nominated for a Grammy and multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards, headlined his first solo tour as a singer/songwriter and performed at the presidential inauguration.
